Trilliant Incorporated, a Smart Grid communications provider and leader in delivering Smart Grid solutions that enhance energy efficiency, utility operations, and renewable resource integration, and Siemens Energy, Inc., a global supplier of products, services and solutions for the entire energy conversion chain and a leading provider of smart grid solutions as well, today announced product interoperability for integrating distribution automation solutions for utility customers. Available immediately, Trilliant’s SecureMesh™ WAN, a Smart Grid communication solution for distribution networking, is interoperable with Siemens’ SIPROTEC® Compact line/feeder protection devices.
The demonstrated interoperability combines Siemens’ feeder protection devices with Trilliant’s Wide Area Network (WAN). The SecureMesh WAN helps utilities provide secure, two-way communications from their operation centers to substations, thus allowing utilities to deploy Siemens’ SIPROTEC protection for remote line/feeder switches. This provides centralized monitoring and management of non-operational data for enhanced grid reliability.
“The combination of SecureMesh and SIPROTEC gives utilities the status of their protection relays,” according to Rob Conant, SVP Network Products at Trilliant. “This interoperability provides plug-and-play simplicity, seamless support for distribution automation protocols, and the low latency required for grid reliability applications.”
Siemens SIPROTEC is the world’s leading protection family for all applications in the distribution feeder protection industry. Trilliant’s SecureMesh WAN provides low latency communications required of distribution automation protocols including DNP3, IEC 61850, and Modbus. It supports low latency peer-to-peer generic object oriented substation event (GOOSE) messaging.
“Trilliant’s expertise in Smart Grid, and its unique multi-tier architecture approach makes them an ideal integration partner for Siemens,” according to Thierry Godart, vice president of Energy Automation at Siemens Energy. “In concert with the protection and control functionality of SIPROTEC, Trilliant’s low-latency, high-throughput SecureMesh suite enhances the communications infrastructure for today’s forward-thinking utilities.”
Siemens understands the complete energy conversion chain and is able to transform today’s grid into a living infrastructure that is smart enough to respond quickly, flexibly and comprehensively to society’s energy needs. Siemens also incorporates solutions for commercial and industrial applications as well as smart homes, including building automation, IT systems integration, advanced lighting technology and energy efficient appliances for a comprehensive Smart Grid solution.
